Budget carrier Wizz Air is planning to reduce its flight operations at Gatwick Airport, citing financial losses. József Váradi, the CEO of the Hungarian airline, disclosed that they will focus on increasing flights from Luton Airport due to lower operating costs. The transition will commence with the relocation of one aircraft from Gatwick to Luton, marking the beginning of a gradual fleet transfer.
This strategic move follows the closure of a Wizz Air subsidiary in Abu Dhabi and the termination of its Vienna base, both attributed to high airport expenses. Váradi emphasized the cost-effectiveness of operating from Luton over Gatwick, stating that reallocating resources to more profitable bases is imperative.
While Wizz Air intends to optimize its presence at Gatwick rather than abandon it entirely, the airline aims to maximize efficiency by concentrating on Luton. The company recently introduced ‘Wizz Class,’ offering passengers the option to reserve a row with an empty middle seat for added comfort. This premium service includes priority boarding, extra carry-on allowances, and guaranteed overhead bin space, catering to travelers seeking a more spacious and convenient flying experience.
Silvia Mosquera, the commercial officer, highlighted that the introduction of Wizz Class is a response to the feedback received from business travelers who value affordable yet comfortable travel options. The new seating arrangement will be available on selected flights departing from major European cities starting in December.
